I use a catalog numbering system to track the pieces that I turn.   Every turning is unique.  Pieces with similar shapes will often look completely different due to the wood species selection, figure and finish.  Each catalog number is specific to a turning.  Thus, my catalog numbers are not used to denote the "nth piece out of a production run of 1000".
